Shopping for Automotive Repair

Shopping by phone gives you the most leverage on getting the best price; but how can someone compare prices without having the problem diagnosed?

Most of the time if you do not know what’s wrong, you can call your local auto parts store or garage and tell them what your car is doing and they will usually let you know what it is.

The most resourceful way to compare prices over the phone is to ask for a hypothetical worst-case scenario; the most it could cost if the motor, transmission, ect; needed major work or replacement. When calling for prices, simply ask how much it would cost to replace the part altogether, if required. Be cautious of anyone who will not give worst-case scenario prices over the phone.

It is a good idea to have the total estimate faxed or e-mailed to you with the statement. This price includes all parts, labor, supplies, and taxes. Make sure they state the length of the warranty, of any part they could replace.
